imani is based on the concept of lines and how these divisions (be them physical or not) shape our realities and understandings of life. However, only through going across these lines can we understand one another honestly and openly. Even if we still decide to keep some lines drawn, understanding one another is what is important. Through music, media, fashion, politics, and culture Hip-Hop has helped interpret the story of America’s history past and present. This issue explores how Hip-Hop in America has and currently is being used as a means for social justice and community empowerment. It will also explore the controversial aspects of the artform and reveal how these controversies influence Americans interpretation of the culture.
